There is so much to think about when you are pregnant. Between doctor visits, buying new items such as prams and baby clothes and mentally preparing for the birth of the bundle of joy, what most people do not think about is getting your home ready. There is so much that will change when the baby arrives and so many changes that will need to be made to the house. It is best to start doing this well ahead of time, for two reasons, you get caught up with the newborn when they are here but as your tummy grows you will have less energy to clean and tidy around the house.

Here are some top tips I will be undertaking when decluttering and organising my house.

Declutter

Decluttering can be time-consuming, so it is important to do this before the bundle of joy arrives. The best way to do this is by making three piles; one pile for essential items, one pile for maybe items and another pile for items you do not need to keep. With the stuff you do not need, consider giving it away to charity or selling it to make some extra cash before the new baby arrives. I not only have new items to buy and find a place for, I have all of Austin’s baby clothes and things to sort and work out whether I should keep? toss? or donate? Another great item is a vacuum storage bag for seasonal clothes or kids clothing not in use - however then you need somewhere to store all of this...

Hire External Storage

When trying to declutter and organise your house, you will most likely find items that you need but do not need or have room for in your house all the time. For example, seasonal sports equipment such as surf boards, winter sports gear or even big winter coats. The best way to combat this might by hiring external storage space. Companies such as Hire Storage are great to use. It is a secured facility that is monitored 24/7, centrally located and access available 6 days a week, has the convenience to store from a few days to years, and is affordable. The removalists collect your belongings, safely store it, and will return it to you when you are ready. It makes moving and storing just that much easier and less stressful knowing you have professionals to help you out.

Make Room in your Fridge

This is probably the last thing an expecting mum will think of. When the new baby arrives, you’re going to need plenty of space for breast milk and baby formula, not to mention all the food family members will bring over when they come to meet the new bundle of joy. When your fridge and freezer are almost empty, give it a good clean. Start from top to bottom throwing out anything you will not need and then wipe down the shelves with warm water. This will save time for when the new baby arrives. Cleaning your fridge will be the last thing on your mind for a long time!

Safety Exam

This one is for down the line when your little one starts moving around however it might be a good time to start thinking about it now. Power points, sharp corners on coffee tables, and opening and closing kitchen cupboards are all things that will cause trouble. Consider moving around or getting new furniture before the baby arrives so you do not need to think about it in the future. For example, if you have a coffee table with sharp edges, consider putting it in a different room to where the baby will spend most of its time or packing away some of those low vases and photo frames now.
